Using Twitter To Connect with Audiences: Personality Matters

Hi, everyone. I was unable to post articles for a week because of my college visit to NYU Abu Dhabi. You never know how amazing that place is until you personally go there. I spent my weekend with the most talented and amiable people on Earth. I was really lucky to be in that group. Now it is time for us resume our conversation on social media. Let us start now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now back to Twitter. Today's posting is not that directly related to Twitter marketing. However, I wanted to show you how important it is to have your own "personality" on Twitter to strike up conversations with other people. And that "personality" charm, as I will point out later, can be a genuine solution for those who are struggling with how to market their brands with Twitter.

Completing your bio on Twitter is absolutely important. When one takes a look at your bio, one has a glimpse of who you are. Keep it very simple and concise. Tell people about who you are by listing up the words that best characterize you. My bio says "High School Student Who Has A Deep Passion for Passion and Social Media." It is short, indeed. Yet, people will know that I am a high school student and that I have interests in fashion and social media. That is enough. Bio must not tell everything about you. People will get to know you once they follow you.

Now I will take Domino Pizza as an example. Domino Pizza was struggling at that time because of a video in which two part-timers spat on a pizza dough. People started attacking Domino Pizza for its low sanitation control. To be literal, people were shocked and evey boycotted whatever was made by Domino Pizza. To deal with this crisis, Domino Pizza came up with the idea of launching a Twitter. HOWEVER... things went awry...

Search results for Dominos were nearly catastrophic. People were obviously ignoring Domino Pizza or were not informed of the fact that it started tweeting.

It was quite apparent that things went differently from what Domino Pizza had expected. Since it barely had followers to support it and propagate its messages, it ended up failing to sort out the reputation issue that agonized it for a long time.

We have to take this example seriously. In terms of a crisis management, it was literally a disaster. BUT we need to see thing in another perspective, too. Why did Dominos fail miserably in the first place? You got it right. They had no followers at its side. From its inception, Domino Pizza's Twitter was created not to establish relationships, but to tackle the controversy surrounding them. There was no personality in it. People were not enchanted by this fact.

We always talk in the first person. It is all about "I" after all. You have to have charms that naturally attract people. Twitter, as we repeatedly witnessed, is an extended conversation. We are just doing our conversations online, not offline. What type of person do you love to chat with? People with their own colors. That is so true. So do not forget to have "you" in your Twitter if you want to be a twitter star.

NGO's Rush to Twitter and Facebook

I feel absolutely refreshed after 12 hours of sleep! I bet you are having nice weekend with your friends, families, and perhaps lovers. Wish everyone a good luck:)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recently, a number of non-governmental organizations joined social network services (especially, Facebook and Twitter) as a means to raise public awareness of the issues with which they are tackling and to spread their messages all around the world. Then, why are social network services appealing greatly to NGOs?

People, when on social network services, collectively tend to behave benevolently. Because their profiles can be accessed freely by other people, including strangers, people want to be recognized as friendly, generous individuals. Thus, when NGOs post messages on social network services, people are willing to participate in such moves by clicking on “Like” on Facebook and “Retweet” on Twitter. It does not take a lot of time to click on icons, but that is enough to show other people that “I am keenly aware of my social responsibilities and I care about people around me.”

- Message Donation
This is the most common type. Here is an example. The United Nations initiated a campaign titled “End Malaria.” In order to turn the campaign into a triumphant success, the UN selected 50 entities, both individuals and foundations, whose influences are powerful enough to propagate the UN’s social messages all across the globe. Those selected entities sent tweets regularly regarding the “End Malaria” campaign and those tweets were reached to about 170 million people. As intended, the UN succeeded in signaling its message that “we should not let children from poor countries die of malaria.”

- Channel Donation
This type of donation is gaining huge popularity among bloggers these days. NGOs design applications in which people can learn about their on-going campaigns and actually donate money thorough online payment. Individual bloggers, after customizing applications to suit their blogs’ designs, put them on display so that visitors can participate in their causes. For example, Facebook Causes, a charity site on Facebook, suggests people to donate money on their birthdays to raise funds.

Thy Yourself: Using Social Media to Build the Brand of You Part1

The following slide show has been shared on www.slideshare.net. Thank you for Parker Brand Creative Services for sharing this valuable information.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

17 Ways You Can Use Twitter Part2

9. Business Management

Twitter can be used as a company intranet that connects employees to one another.

Workers can liaise with each other when working on group projects.

Particularly useful when certain workers go out often in the field.

Updates could be set to private for security reasons.

10. Notify Your Customers

Set up a Twitter feed for the specific purpose of notifying customers when new products come in.

Customers can subscribe via mobile or RSS for instant notification.

Twitter can also be used to provide mini-updates for one-on-one clients.

11. Take Notes

Twitter provides you with an easy way to record important ideas or concepts you want to explore further.

Include links relevant to ideas you want to explore.

Note taking can also be done offline via mobile applications.

12. Event Updates

Businesses can use Twitter as a means to inform event participants and latest event happenings/changes.

This is a hassle-free way of disseminating information, especially when you don’t have the means to set up a direct mobile link between you and the audience.

13. Find Prospects

Twitter can be used as a means to find potential customers or clients online.

Do a search for keywords related to your product on Twitter Search and then follow users.

Twitter Search

Tweet about topics parallel to your product and close prospects away from public channels by using direct messages or offline communications.

Discretion and skill is needed in this area.

14. Provide Live coverage

Twitter’s message size limit prevents detailed coverage of events but it can allow you to provide real-time commentary which may help to spark further discussion or interest on the event as other Twitter users spread the message.

Very useful for citizen journalism.

15. Time Management and Analysis

Twitter can simply be used to keep a detailed record of what you are doing every daily.

This might be boring for others but this type of usage is useful when you want to analyze how you spend and manage your time.

16. Set Up Meetings

Twitter can help you organize impromptu meetups.

For example, you can twitter a message while at a cafe, event or art gallery and arrange to meet fellow users at a specific spot.

It’s an informal and casual way of arranging a meeting.

17. Acquire Votes

Send a link to your stories you’ve submitted in other social news sites like Digg.

Sometimes your followers will vote up the stories because they agree with it.

This allows you to acquire more support for your efforts on other social media websites.

Say Goodbye to Google Wave

Another cloudy day... When the sun will rise to shine? I am listening to "This is the moment" from Jekyll & Hyde, one of my favorite musicals. I really like its lyrics. The song comforts me and gives me a positive energy. Let's dive into the today's topic then:)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever heard of Google Wave? It is a type of social networking service provided by Google. Google, at first, was so sure that Google Wave will rise above other social networking services such as Facebook and Twitter. Google Wave featured many functions that other social networking services did not provide or poorly provided. Let me list some functions of Google Wave with pictures to help your understanding.

Voting

Group Report

File sharing

Meeting Note

Brainstorming

Google Wave indeed provides some nice functions that other social networking services do not provide. For example, a group of friends can easily write and edit a research paper online while colleagues can discuss their department's agendas with ease. Then, why Google decided to waive Google Wave?

The biggest strength of Google Wave was that it allowed its users to collaborate easily online. Yet, it failed to grab the public's attention and Google, on August 4th, announced that it will stop supporting the service. What drove Google Wave to a fiasco? Let us analyze it.

1. Google admitted that the service was a bit ahead of its time and thus failed to capture the public's interest. Google mentioned that Google Wave provided too many diverse services without a single brand identity. Google's own explanation is quite plausible. Nowadays the public wants a simple yet interesting service. In terms of simplicity and fun, Google Wave was meant to face a quagmire.

2. The developer of Google Wave also admitted that its users might have had difficulty utilizing the service because it gets slower as the users use many functions at a time. This technical fault led the users to turn their backs away from Google Wave.

3. Finally, Google Buzz also partially contributed to a collapse of Google Wave. Jonathan Yarmis, an IT analyst, pointed out that Google Buzz is far more useful and convenient to use than Google Wave. He further commented that the reason why Facebook and Twitter are garnering all the people around the globl is that they concentrate on a single service that everyone is interested in.

People say that Google is planning to launch another social networking platform soon and expect to integrate various functions of Google Wave into that platform. Let us wait until Google comes with its miraculous service.

Ragnarok and Twitter

Yesterday was so hot and scorching. Today is a little bit better and I can feel the summer breeze. Now let us dive into the today's topic.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever heard of Ragnarok before? If so, you might be a huge fan of online games. Ragnarok is an online RPG (Role-Playing Game) that earned huge success not only in the Korean market but also in many Asian countries. The enormous popularity of Ragnarok is indicated by the number of its users who are willing to pay to play the game.

Yesterday, the CEO of Gravity announced that it opened a Twitter account so as to communicate with its users. Game users can freely express their opinions regarding the game to the administration department via Twitter. Moreover, if there are great ideas to improve the game, they also can send their creative ideas through Twitter. The administration body will review those suggestions and finally reflect them into the game if they are good enough.

Gravity is planning to carry out many fun events through Twitter. Gravity's move is under the spotlight of the public because until now no game companies have come up with their own Twitter accounts. Ragnarok is again going another step forward in terms of its customer relationship management.

SNS marketing: IKEA and Helena Rubinstein

I woke up late... Yesterday I went to Yonsei University to take part in a English Literature Essay Contest. I was very lucky since the given passage was "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. I learned it in English Literature class last year:) But... no one knows who will get the prize since only 6 spots are reserved. Let's get back to our business.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. IKEA

IKEA is an international home products retailer that sells flat pack furniture, accessories, and bathroom and kitchen items. When IKEA launced a store in Malmo (Swiss), it decided to employ a social media marketing. The manager of the store opened a facebook account and uploaded 12 photos of his store for 2 weeks. The manager said, "Whoever tags our product first will get that product for free." People reacted to this notice, spreading the message to myriad people. IKEA was able to market itself without using a huge sum of money.

2. Helena Rubinstein

Helena Rubinstein is a cosmetics company. Last year, Helena Rubinstein launched a perfume named Wanted in collaboration with Demi Moore. Helena Rubinstein decided to use Demi Moore as its marketing strategy. She had 2 million followers on Twitter while her husband, Ashton Kutcher, had 4 million followers on Twitter. Having 6 million people to market its product, Helena Rubinstein asked Demi Moore to tweet a message: "Make a video about your wanting." A number of people actually created their own videos and uploaded them on YouTube. Moreover, myriad people got to know about the perfume.

Foursquare, Loopt, Gowalla(제가 조만간에 Gowalla에 관해서 포스팅을 하겠습니다^^) 등 모바일 위치기반서비스는 요즘 가장 치열한 경쟁이 벌어지고 있는 분야입니다.

Domino's Pizza's Social Media Marketing: A Half-Success?

I am finally on vacation. Yeah~

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today's topic is Domino's Pizza. I ate it yesterday, and it was very delicious as usual. What happened to Domino's Pizza? Let us check it out.

A few weeks ago, an e-mail came in. The title read "You can eat Domino's Pizza for free." I clicked an e-mail hurriedly so as not to miss a chance to eat it free of charge. The e-mail turned out to be an advertisement, not so surprisingly...

The advertisement featured its newest model, Girl's Generation. (Yeah~ I should eat it more frequently.) The advertisement said that I can get a 1000 won discount per 100 followers. If you have more than 20000 followers, you can get a pizza for free because you will get a 20000 won discount. This advertisement was invented in order to encourage customers to follow a Domino Pizza Korea's Twitter account. I thought this advertisement was very ingenuous and was sure this one is going to succeed. Yet... it went against my expectation.

This picture illustrates the process by which messages are propagated via Twitter. If one twitter user posts a 140-words tweet, the message is directly sent to his or her followers. If followers like this message, they can retweet it so that their followers also can share this useful information. It is like a cell division. Messages can be spread to a huge number of people in an amazingly short period of time. This is the dynamics of Twitter, and this is the very reason why many people are addicted to it. Moreover, this is the core reason why enterprises keep their eyes close on Twitter.

The outcome of this advertisement was disastrous. People were only interested in increasing their followers so that they can get their pizzas for free. People did whatever they could do. This phenomenon only ended up increasing the number of zombie accounts. Domino's Pizza tweeted an apology for creating this huge chaos.

What did Domino's Pizza miss? The very purpose of Twitter, as I repeatedly said, was communication. However, when marketers designed this advertisement, they excluded communication factor. They should have designed the advertisement in a way that people can communicate with Domino's Pizza. However, by its mistake, the only incentive given to its customers was money: eating pizzas for free. Avid Twitter users castigated Domino Pizza's for violating Twitter rules and honor codes.

The lesson corporate marketers should learn from this incident is that social media is all about communication, not profit maximization.

Paper Proposal: A new digital divide

This is my paper proposal. Hope this win the attention of the judges.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Background
Thanks to the rapid development of the Internet, the information gap between those who have access to the Internet and those who do not has greatly widened. Age used to be the primary factor in this division. Younger generation was more likely to have easier access to the Internet and knew how to utilize it to its advantage.

These days, however, people mostly have access to the Internet regardless of their age. In other words, all generations gained access to the Internet with the establishment of its infrastructure. What is more important now is to know how to use the Internet intelligently to acquire the information they want.

Recently, social media and social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook and Twitter have garnered huge attention from the public. According to a special report published by The Economist, these media channels enable people to establish social networks with people all around the globe with a small amount of effort. Moreover, they are transforming the way people gather information. In addition, smart phones, connected to the Internet and social media, are making people’s lives more ubiquitous than ever. This means people can access the Internet whenever they want to.

Surprisingly, age does not play a pivotal role when it comes to the use of social media. According to a survey, people in their 40s actively engage themselves in the use of social media while people in their 20s have only a slightly higher participation rate. Thus, it is quite obvious that a new digital divide will surface from now on. This time, it has nothing to do with people’s age. Rather, it is more important for individuals to know how to take advantage of these social network sites. Thus, I propose to write a dissertation that delves into the current use of social media and its impact on the digital divide.

2. Research objectives
The objective of this dissertation lies in figuring out and having a glimpse of the current use of social media by different age groups. Then, it will identify the relationship between the use of social media and the digital divide. It will further prove that this new digital divide created by the social media is not dependent upon age. By delving into the topic, this dissertation hopefully can propose how to remedy this chasm.

3. Research questions
- What are social media and social networking sites?
- How different age groups utilize social media and social networking sites?
- How social media and social networking sites transformed the way people gather information?
- What social implications do social media and social networking sites have on our society?
- Is age really an insignificant factor when it comes to the new digital divide?

4. Research methods
- Survey questions: Asking people from different age groups about their use of social media and social networking sites
- Books: Grasping the background of social media and social networking sites and its development
- Authorities: Consult experts in this field, including the CEO of my internship company, on the prospects of social media and social networking sites
- Internet: Gather the necessary information to corroborate my argument and proofs
Statistics is the most integral part of my research, for the results of statistics is crucial in determining whether this new digital divide, as I claimed, has nothing to with the people’s age. Thus, I will collect as many specimens as possible to minimize the error of my research.

5. Significance of the Research
People traditionally have assumed that older people are less apt at acquiring information that younger ones. This claim was partially true before the introduction of social media and social networking sites. However, as I will prove in my dissertation, age plays a less significant role in the realm of social media and social networking sites. Thus, my dissertation will help readers correctly comprehend a new definition of digital divide, one that is regardless of age. Moreover, this dissertation hopefully can propose then what role the government and individuals should play in order to fill in this wide gap.

What Companies Can Get from Social Media Marketing

Today's topic might seem banal at the very first glance. However, it is meaningful to go over what benefits companies can expect to gain from actively engaging themselves with social media marketing.

Before we go on, we need to make one thing very clear: social media marketing is not about selling products. It is all about making solid relationships. Later, these relationships will prove to be very useful because sincere social media marketing can ultimately lead customers to purchase certain products. Again, the very focus of social media marketing never lies in selling goods. It is rather a secondary purpose.

   1. Establishing a Brand

Establishing a brand means that more people get to know about your brand. It means that the image of your brand becomes deeply rooted in people's minds. Through incessant communications with customers and prospects, a newly born brand can establish its brand.

   2. Brand Loyalty

Once you build relationships with your customers, the next step you should take is to make them loyal to your brand. It means your customers grow affectionate towards your brand. Thorough continuous communications, you can make your customers feel that you sincerely care about them. This is when strong bonds between companies and customers are born.

   3. Evangelist

Now, you made your customers "like" your brand. However, this is not enough. You need to convert them to evangelists, ones that truly love your brand. Converting them is not a simple and easy process. You have to give an impression that your company takes each and every customer seriously and do your best to satisfy their needs.

   4. Making Buzzes

These evangelists now become your biggest assets. They constantly make buzzes about your brand and your products. They might post articles on their blogs or social networking sites (such as, Facebook and Twitter) to tell people how content they are with your brand and your products. There is no expert in social media. Relationship there is very horizontal. Everyone can become experts in their own fields that they are interested in. Undoubtedly, people listen to these experts' remarks. This is when social media marketing can make you money.

   5. Spontaneous and Immediate Feedbacks

Thanks to the rapid development of social media channels, you can communicate with you customers almost real time. You can answer their queries real fast. Customers feel that their questions are being taken seriously and are answered quickly. This again helps companies establish solid relationships with customers.

5 Emerging Social Media Sites to Watch

This post translated, modified, and reinterpreted the original post of http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/5-emerging-social-media-sites-to-watch-in-2010.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Foursquare

2. Google Buzz

3. Loopt

4. Blippy

5. Groupon

4 Themes for Social Media Marketing in 2010 Part1

The source of this article is from Jeremiah's presentation:)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things are getting tougher. Companies must move faster to keep up with the fleeting customer, by developing processes and systems that will provide customers with a holistic experience that are four trends to watch:

1. Don't fondle the hammer.

First, focus on customers.

Run when you hear "Twitter Strategy or Facebook Strategy."

Instead, focus on how you'll understand customers.

Then, choose a business objective.

- Where are your customers online?

- What are your customers' social behaviors online?

- What social information or people do your customers rely on?

- What is your customers' social influence? Who trusts them?

- How do your customers use social technologies in the context of your products?

2. Live the 80% rule. (80%

Get your company ready.

Treat social success like launching a new product.

80% of success is getting your company ready: only 20% is about the technologies.

Distributed(분산형)

ex) SUN

Centralized(중심형)

ex) FORD

Coordinated(협동형)

ex) HP

Roles

-Social Strategist: Responsible for the overall program, including ROI

-Community Manager: Customer facing role trusted by customers.

B2B Social Media Marketing

I came from Shanghai. The city was quite impressive! Sorry for not posting articles because of my sojourn in Shanghai:)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B2B marketing is a type of marketing that goes between companies. These days, the importance of B2B marketing is ever increasing because companies also can be customers. For example, for a company that produces construction materials, its customers could be individuals who want to buy its products to decorate their houses by themselves. However, more importantly, their main target customers would include big construction companies that need construction materials to build tall apartments. In this sense, appealing to those companies, which in this case are customers, is utterly pivotal. Being aware of the significance of B2B marketing, companies are now taking advantage of social media as a means to implement effective B2B marketing strategies.

Let us case study BP, a British oil company, that is being recently accused of the disasterous oil spill. BP is severely castigated by myriad individuals, governments, and non-governmental organizations for not properly dealing with the current situation. In the first place, BP fails to give people an impression that it is being apologetic for what it has done. It continuously sent out TV commercials and google advertisements, which ended up aggravating the audience. Recently, Tony Hayward, the senior excutive of BP, came up on TV to express how regretful and apologetic he and his company is to this calamitous disaster of the century. However, it only made the audience angry, worsening the situation. Hurriedly, BP launched Twitter and Facebook to at least show that it sincerely wants to communicate with the public. Again, people grew skeptic of BP. However, the biggest loss BP had to bear was that those who had partnerships or did business decided to leave BP. The loss could have been minimized had BP established good social networks with those companies rather than stucking up its noses.

There are two important lessons to learn from this case.

1) It is important to business to maintain good relationships with other connected businesses, and social media can serve as a good tool.

2) More importantly, establishing trust requires quite a long time. Thus, when managing social media, companies should earnestly treat their customers rather than being perfunctory.

Twitter

DELL: The Power of Twitter Marketing Part2

Did you have a wonderful weekend? I am sure you did:)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last week, I posted an article about DELL's twitter marketing. Now that you know how adroitly DELL utilizes twitter as its marketing channel, let us now analyze what specific roles Twitter plays!

1. Customer Service

Like other enterprises, DELL utilizes twitter to respond to various needs of its customers. If customers raise complaints, DELL responds to them and tries to fix inconvenience. Customers can get their messages conveyed and receive answers from DELL quickly. In accomodating the customer's needs and requests, DELL makes use of CoTweet. CoTweet allows DELL to respond to myraid questions efficiently in a short amount of time. CoTweet is a revolutionary tool and I am going to post an article about CoTweet soon.

2. New Product and Service Promotion

This is one of the basic roles of Twitter. When companies launch new product or service, they promote them through Twitter in an attempt to create buzzes.

3. Sales

This is what differentiates DELL from its competitors. DELL is currently owning DellOutlet. Those who follow DellOutlet can get several benefits such as discount. Through DellOutlet, DELL is taking care of leftover products, reducing its inventories. DELL earned quite decent amount of profit through DellOutlet.

4. Distributing Digital Contents - Syndication

Those who are following DELL Twitter have their own Twtter accounts. When DELL posts digital contents, those who follow DELL Twitter propagates these contents. Considering that quite a lot of people are following DELL, the distribution impact is quite huge.

5. Idea Generating Channel

IdeaStorm

IdeaStorm is where a lot of ideas are being generated. When person A suggests his idea on IdeaStorm, it automatically goes to Twitter. Person B, then, adds another idea or gives his feedback  to Person A's idea. In this series of process, nice ideas are being fashioned out. DELL actually takes advantages of these ideas and customers can see their ideas being applied to DELL's products.

6. Monitoring by Key Words

When DELL wants to figure out what people say about DELL, it can also utilize Twitter. If DELL enter a key word, it can see what people think about DELL concerning that specific key word.

7. Risk Management

I once posted an article about how Toyota dealt with the customer's complaints when it decided to recall its products. The result was pretty successful and the sales is slowly going up. It can be applied to other enterprises. By using Twitter, DELL can effectively take care of the customer's complaints and stop those complaints from being heard by others who have positive impression of DELL.

These are mojor 7 roles of Twitter. DELL is employing all of them quite effectively. As you can see, all these functions are connected to each other. In order to create synergy effects, companies should keep in mind that they invest time and money equally in all of these functions.

10 Misconceptions Regarding the Social Media Marketing Part2

6. Social media marketing has no rules?

7. Social media marketing gets immediate results?

8. Social media marketing is too risky?

9. Social media marketing is new?

10. Social media marketing doesn't apply to my business?
