----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a banner year for social media growth and adoption.

We witnessed Facebook overtake Google in most weekly site traffic, while some surveys reported nearly 95% of companies using LinkedIn to help in recruiting efforts.

In my outlook for last year, I cited that mobile would become a lifeline to those looking for their social media fixes, and indeed the use of social media through mobile devices increased in the triple digits.

I also outlined how "social media would look less social" or more accurately exclusive, and indeed, we've seen the re-launch of Facebook groups, which focus on niche interactivity, and more recently, the emergence of Path, billed as "the social network for intimate friends" which limits your network to only 50 people.

The past year also saw some brands go full throttle on Foursquare's game-like geo-location platform, attempting to reward mayors and creating custom badges for the network's power users.

In other areas, such as social media policy, I was less accurate. Conversations around the topic did begin to take place, But a global survey indicated that only 29 percent of companies even have a social media policy. That's not as high as I expected.

What Is Social Currency?

Hi, everyone. I feel terribly sorry for not posting articles for the last couple of days. I had to study for my final exam. Now that it's finally over, I will restart writing down articles about social media to strike up pleasant conversations with all of you. Enough with introduction. Let us start now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today's topic is social currency. Seems like the word "social" is becoming more popular prefix these days. I guess many of you are now wondering how a currency can be social. Taking a quick look at how this system works might offer us an insight to what social currency is.

Here are some examples of how social currency works. You and your friends dined at a nice, decent restaurant. On your way back home, you made some nice remarks about the restaurant and its dishes. Then here's comes a magic. The restaurant sends you a mobile coupon to your cell phone. Actually this is what is now happening around us.

Thanks to the advent of social networking services and location based services, businesses discovered new ways to promote their brands and manage their customers. Mr. Pizza, a famous pizza franchise, announced that if you leave comments like "I had a nice lunch with my friends at Mr. Pizza" through "I'm IN", a Korean version of Foursquare, you can receive discount coupons that worth 2000 won. Same is for GAP, a world-renowned American fashion brand. So these days, comments you make, photos you take, videos you post online can actually turn into a usable sum of money. Isn't this so cool?

To explain this situation, Silicon Valley had to coin the term "Social Currency." This is a huge opportunity for every business. Facebook is planning to commercialize this idea with their own invention called "Facebook Place" which will support all types of online transactions. There had been something similar to social currency before. However, they all failed because there were no SNS and LBS to support that idea. Now that Facebook's membership amounts to 0.6 billion and Foursquare is steering its way to victory, it is pretty obvious that the future of social currency is very bright and promising.

Project Titan: Facebook's Gmail Killer

Reference: http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/11/facebook-gmail-titan/

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back in February we wrote about Facebook’s secret Project Titan — a web-based email client that we hear is unofficially referred to internally as its “Gmail killer”. Now we’ve heard from sources that this is indeed what’s coming on Monday during Facebook’s special event, alongside personal @facebook.com email addresses for users.

This isn’t a big surprise — the event invites Facebook sent out hinted strongly that the news would have something to do with its Inbox, sparking plenty of speculation that the event could be related to Titan. Our understanding is that this is more than just a UI refresh for Facebook’s existing messaging service with POP access tacked on. Rather, Facebook is building a full-fledged webmail client, and while it may only be in early stages come its launch Monday, there’s a huge amount of potential here.

Facebook has the world’s most popular photos product, the most popular events product, and soon will have a very popular local deals product as well.  It can tweak the design of its webmail client to display content from each of these in a seamless fashion (and don’t forget messages from games, or payments via Facebook Credits). And there’s also the social element: Facebook knows who your friends are and how closely you’re connected to them; it can probably do a pretty good job figuring out which personal emails you want to read most and prioritize them accordingly.

Using Twitter To Connect with Audiences: Personality Matters

Hi, everyone. I was unable to post articles for a week because of my college visit to NYU Abu Dhabi. You never know how amazing that place is until you personally go there. I spent my weekend with the most talented and amiable people on Earth. I was really lucky to be in that group. Now it is time for us resume our conversation on social media. Let us start now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now back to Twitter. Today's posting is not that directly related to Twitter marketing. However, I wanted to show you how important it is to have your own "personality" on Twitter to strike up conversations with other people. And that "personality" charm, as I will point out later, can be a genuine solution for those who are struggling with how to market their brands with Twitter.

Completing your bio on Twitter is absolutely important. When one takes a look at your bio, one has a glimpse of who you are. Keep it very simple and concise. Tell people about who you are by listing up the words that best characterize you. My bio says "High School Student Who Has A Deep Passion for Passion and Social Media." It is short, indeed. Yet, people will know that I am a high school student and that I have interests in fashion and social media. That is enough. Bio must not tell everything about you. People will get to know you once they follow you.

Now I will take Domino Pizza as an example. Domino Pizza was struggling at that time because of a video in which two part-timers spat on a pizza dough. People started attacking Domino Pizza for its low sanitation control. To be literal, people were shocked and evey boycotted whatever was made by Domino Pizza. To deal with this crisis, Domino Pizza came up with the idea of launching a Twitter. HOWEVER... things went awry...

Search results for Dominos were nearly catastrophic. People were obviously ignoring Domino Pizza or were not informed of the fact that it started tweeting.

It was quite apparent that things went differently from what Domino Pizza had expected. Since it barely had followers to support it and propagate its messages, it ended up failing to sort out the reputation issue that agonized it for a long time.

We have to take this example seriously. In terms of a crisis management, it was literally a disaster. BUT we need to see thing in another perspective, too. Why did Dominos fail miserably in the first place? You got it right. They had no followers at its side. From its inception, Domino Pizza's Twitter was created not to establish relationships, but to tackle the controversy surrounding them. There was no personality in it. People were not enchanted by this fact.

We always talk in the first person. It is all about "I" after all. You have to have charms that naturally attract people. Twitter, as we repeatedly witnessed, is an extended conversation. We are just doing our conversations online, not offline. What type of person do you love to chat with? People with their own colors. That is so true. So do not forget to have "you" in your Twitter if you want to be a twitter star.

Social Media in the Middle East Part1

사이트가 자체 제작한 콘텐츠도 있지만 대부분이 UGC(User-Generated-Contents)입니다.

3. Baralbait

4. LEBConnection

In Facebook Vs. Google, Facebook Wins A Skirmish in Social Commerce

By Oliver Chiang

Image representing Eventbrite as depicted in C...

Facebook and Google have been engaged in a war for some time now over online engagement, user traffic and even employees, as the ever-growing social network expands into Google territory and vice versa.

Now Facebook can add a small, but significant win: driving more traffic to online events registration site Eventbrite, and driving ticket sales.

Eventbrite, which allows people to set up pages to promote their events and sell tickets, just released a report titled Social Commerce that takes a look over the past 12 weeks at how social networks are driving traffic or ticket sales to the site.

One finding: Facebook is the no. 1 referring site to Eventbrite.com, surpassing Google.

One Facebook share of an event drives 11 visits back to the site, according to the report.

Just last April when I profiled the company, Eventbrite’s top referrer was Google, with Facebook in second.

Those positions quickly changed.

“The hyper-relevancy of the social graph breeds deeper engagement, greater sales and stickier audiences,” the report says.

It makes sense that more people would be interested in learning about an event from a share from their friend on Facebook rather than from a Google search.

You see an event your friend is attending, maybe you want to go as well.

Eventbrite says sharing rates are consistent across its events of all sizes, from a 10-person workshop to a 10,000-person conference.

Facebook is also a major driver of ticket sales, according to the report, which looked at each of the social networks it was on (Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn) and its own “email friends” sharing application.

One share on Facebook represents $2.52 in sales transactions.

A share through “email friends” equals $2.34; on LinkedIn, $0.90; and on Twitter, $0.43.

In aggregate across these social sharing mechanisms, each share equals $1.78.

That’s during the 12-week study period.

Eventbrite says the number continues to improve.

The most recent 4-week average of the study period was $1.87.

“Social sharing magnifies word of mouth, and that act of sharing actually results in a real transaction at the end of the day,” says Tamara Mendelsohn, Eventbrite’s director of marketing.

The report comes on the heels of Eventbrite’s raising $20 million in fourth-round funding earlier this month, bringing total funding of the startup to $29.5 million.

At the time, the company said it had brokered the sale of 7.5 million tickets this year and expected to sell more than $200 million worth of tickets by the end of 2010.

That’s double the amount it sold last year.

News site paidContent.org estimates the company is making well above $7.5 million in revenue a year now.

While Eventbrite isn’t a big player yet, it is a fast-growing company in online ticket sales.

Its report is significant for event organizers and others in the industry, by giving actual hard figures to the transactional value of a share on social network.

Eventbrite co-founder Julia Hartz thinks the report’s findings apply to all of e-commerce, whether it’s discovering the value of a share on another good like a book.

The company has already begun to act on the findings of its report.

At the end of last month, it launched a new filter on the site’s events recommendation engine called Facebook Recommendations, which allows users to discover which friends are attending events.

먼저 Chris Hughes는 IT Myth(IT 전설)로 강연을 시작하였습니다. 인생의 20-30대(In his 20s or 30s)에 있는 호기심 많고(curious), 야심을 품은(ambitious) 한 청년(Young Man)이 창의적인 아이디어(creative idea)를 떠올리게 되고 그 아이디어는 항상 기숙사방(dormroom)이나 차고(garage)에서 실현된다는 것이죠.

Thy Yourself: Using Social Media to Build the Brand of You Part2

Thy Yourself: Using Social Media to Build the Brand of You Part1

The following slide show has been shared on www.slideshare.net. Thank you for Parker Brand Creative Services for sharing this valuable information.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

17 Ways You Can Use Twitter Part2

9. Business Management

Twitter can be used as a company intranet that connects employees to one another.

Workers can liaise with each other when working on group projects.

Particularly useful when certain workers go out often in the field.

Updates could be set to private for security reasons.

10. Notify Your Customers

Set up a Twitter feed for the specific purpose of notifying customers when new products come in.

Customers can subscribe via mobile or RSS for instant notification.

Twitter can also be used to provide mini-updates for one-on-one clients.

11. Take Notes

Twitter provides you with an easy way to record important ideas or concepts you want to explore further.

Include links relevant to ideas you want to explore.

Note taking can also be done offline via mobile applications.

12. Event Updates

Businesses can use Twitter as a means to inform event participants and latest event happenings/changes.

This is a hassle-free way of disseminating information, especially when you don’t have the means to set up a direct mobile link between you and the audience.

13. Find Prospects

Twitter can be used as a means to find potential customers or clients online.

Do a search for keywords related to your product on Twitter Search and then follow users.

Twitter Search

Tweet about topics parallel to your product and close prospects away from public channels by using direct messages or offline communications.

Discretion and skill is needed in this area.

14. Provide Live coverage

Twitter’s message size limit prevents detailed coverage of events but it can allow you to provide real-time commentary which may help to spark further discussion or interest on the event as other Twitter users spread the message.

Very useful for citizen journalism.

15. Time Management and Analysis

Twitter can simply be used to keep a detailed record of what you are doing every daily.

This might be boring for others but this type of usage is useful when you want to analyze how you spend and manage your time.

16. Set Up Meetings

Twitter can help you organize impromptu meetups.

For example, you can twitter a message while at a cafe, event or art gallery and arrange to meet fellow users at a specific spot.

It’s an informal and casual way of arranging a meeting.

17. Acquire Votes

Send a link to your stories you’ve submitted in other social news sites like Digg.

Sometimes your followers will vote up the stories because they agree with it.

This allows you to acquire more support for your efforts on other social media websites.

The Era of Social Commerce

Today's keyword is social commerce. We have defined what social commerce is when we talked about Levi's before. Groupon is a leading social commerce service provider in America. In Korea, Ticketmonster is gaining popularity, especially by people in their 20s and early 30s. Why these social commerce services are becoming popular these days?

First, we need to understand the dynamics of social commerce. Three entities are involved in this process: local service provider, social commerce service provider, and customers. Local service providers register their services at social commerce websites. Customers glance over the registered services and buy the services they like. Social commerce is taking advantage of these customers' buying power. If a certain number of customers is willing to buy a certain service, local service providers bargain the service's price and customers can buy it at a much cheaper price. It is a sort of group purchasing. Social commerce service providers give back the profits after they receive a commission.

Customers can enjoy many different services that they really wanted to use but were too expensive without paying much. Local business providers can market their services and earn profits at the same time. Social commerce service providers, of course, yields profits during this transaction. All the entities involved benefit from social commerce.

Yet, there are potential dangers in social commerce business. The quality of services provided by local service providers might be poor. Thus, social commerce service providers must make sure that registered services are of good qualities. If people keep feeling disappointed or unsatisfied, social commerce business is bound to perish. It is of utmost importance for social commerce service providers to have many different local service providers because a variety of services provided matters to their customers. At the same time, the management of those local service providers should be rigorous enough to guarantee the quality of services provided.

It is an undeniable truth that social commerce is on the rise. Many people even commented that social commerce is the most brilliant business model after Google. In order to further thrive, social commerce service providers should be wary of many potential dangers hidden in the industry and deal with those perils wisely.

Facebook A-Z Part3

Let's go~~!!

Facebook

Say Goodbye to Google Wave

Another cloudy day... When the sun will rise to shine? I am listening to "This is the moment" from Jekyll & Hyde, one of my favorite musicals. I really like its lyrics. The song comforts me and gives me a positive energy. Let's dive into the today's topic then:)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever heard of Google Wave? It is a type of social networking service provided by Google. Google, at first, was so sure that Google Wave will rise above other social networking services such as Facebook and Twitter. Google Wave featured many functions that other social networking services did not provide or poorly provided. Let me list some functions of Google Wave with pictures to help your understanding.

Voting

Group Report

File sharing

Meeting Note

Brainstorming

Google Wave indeed provides some nice functions that other social networking services do not provide. For example, a group of friends can easily write and edit a research paper online while colleagues can discuss their department's agendas with ease. Then, why Google decided to waive Google Wave?

The biggest strength of Google Wave was that it allowed its users to collaborate easily online. Yet, it failed to grab the public's attention and Google, on August 4th, announced that it will stop supporting the service. What drove Google Wave to a fiasco? Let us analyze it.

1. Google admitted that the service was a bit ahead of its time and thus failed to capture the public's interest. Google mentioned that Google Wave provided too many diverse services without a single brand identity. Google's own explanation is quite plausible. Nowadays the public wants a simple yet interesting service. In terms of simplicity and fun, Google Wave was meant to face a quagmire.

2. The developer of Google Wave also admitted that its users might have had difficulty utilizing the service because it gets slower as the users use many functions at a time. This technical fault led the users to turn their backs away from Google Wave.

3. Finally, Google Buzz also partially contributed to a collapse of Google Wave. Jonathan Yarmis, an IT analyst, pointed out that Google Buzz is far more useful and convenient to use than Google Wave. He further commented that the reason why Facebook and Twitter are garnering all the people around the globl is that they concentrate on a single service that everyone is interested in.

People say that Google is planning to launch another social networking platform soon and expect to integrate various functions of Google Wave into that platform. Let us wait until Google comes with its miraculous service.

Facebook A-Z Part1

Social Commerce

Clouds are all over the sky, making me feel gloomy... Yesterday I saw movie titled "이끼." You should go and watch this one.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, we are going to talk about social commerce. What comes up in your mind when you hear the words "social" and "commerce"? It is very hard to define exactly what social commerce is because the concept itself is something new. It may refer to group purchase sites. It may encompass the use of social networking sites as a means of promote one's commerce. So just think that social commerce is the combination of social media and electronic commerce. It is in its very early stage of development, so we have to watch whether it will keep evolving. Then, why did social commerce become popular these days?

Before we move on, for those who really want to know the dictionary definition of social commerce, here it is. Wikipedia says social commerce is a subject of electronic commerce that involves using social media, online media that supports social interaction and user contributions, to assist in the online buying and selling of products and services. Very Long! Oh... It keeps on saying... "More succinctly, social commerce is the use of social media in the context of e-commerce." See? Pretty much same with what we have talked about in the previous paragraph.

Let us get back to our business. Why is social commerce so popular? Analysts say there are mainly three reasons for which social commerce is under the spotlight of customers and companies.

1. Increase in Traffic

Social commerce basically takes advantage of huge social networks already established in social media. Thus, the number of prospective customers can be phenomenally huge if companies know how to use social media.

2. Substantial Decrease in Marketing Cost

This is what we have always talked about when discussing social media. Less marketing cost! (It does not mean that you do not invest time or money in social media marketing.)

3. Increase in Purchase Possibility

Friends share same interests. If a friend buys one product and recommends about it to his or her friends, those friends whose interests are similar to him or her are more likely to purchase the item, too. Also, people tend to believe what their friends and acquaintances say than what companies say.

Today, we discussed what social commerce is and why social commerce is popular. Tomorrow, we will go over the examples of social media to help our comprehension on the subject. Have nice day~

Foursquare, Loopt, Gowalla(제가 조만간에 Gowalla에 관해서 포스팅을 하겠습니다^^) 등 모바일 위치기반서비스는 요즘 가장 치열한 경쟁이 벌어지고 있는 분야입니다.

Twitter's Mobile Location Based Service: Twitter Place

It's Monday! Do you feel refreshed? Although it rained cats and dogs during the weekend, never feel down! Start you day with a big smile:) Let's start our journey of the week!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last week, we have talked about mobile location based services such as Foursquare or Loopt. Indeed, mobile location based services are in the spotlight of customers and companies. Although Foursquare is a front-runner in this industry, a number of other mobile location based services are being launched, making this industry highly competitive. And, it seems like the competition will get fiercer as Twitter also launches its own mobile location based service, Twitter Place.

Twitter announced that its new service will build a cooperative system with Foursquare. Unlike Fourquare in which you only could locate yourself in terms of latitude and longitude, Twitter Place allows you to add restaurants or stores as new places. After adding the places, you can send tweets to your followers. Basically, it is like a check-in system in Foursquare.

What's more special about Twitter Place is that you can search tweets that are related to the place you are now in. As you can see in this photo, if you search Burlingame, CA, you can see tweets related to Burlingame, CA.

Twitter Place has been launched in 65 countries. You can download Twitter Place apps if you are using iPhone or Android. Will Twitter Place succeed in gaining market share this industry? Let's wait. Only time will tell.
